An iterative approach helps to remove risk and uncertainty and that is its main strength.  It provides small steps so you can re-plan or re-strategize at smaller intervals if things aren't working out.  In a product environment, it might offer an opportunity for early sales and marketing.  Iterative planning can be used in many situations although it is most often used in software and technology projects.
