Tricks of the trade in project management

What are the tricks of the trade in project management? Is there like a list compiled by some very experienced project managers for all these tricks? I'm looking for tricks to increase the accuracy of the estimates and to enhance the productivity of the project manager.

Also, what is the most important trick in project management?

I haven't heard of such thing before - as far as I know, there are no tricks for the trade in project management.

In PM (unlike many other professions), everything is an open book:

- Be a leader, not just another manager
- Treat your team members well (don't treat them or refer to them as resources)
- Be honest in your estimates, with yourself first, and then with your client and the stakeholders
- Insist on involving the project sponsor regularly on your project
- Create all the necessary planning prior to starting the project (including risk planning, stakeholder management planning, conflict management planning, etc...)
- Report regularly to your stakeholders
- Adopt a standard process to accept change requests
- Always remind yourself that your aim is to have a successful project, and not to successfully implement a project management methodology
- Have clear goals, objectives, milestones, and deliverables (see here for the difference between a milestone and a deliverable: http://www.projectmanagementquestions.com/1581/what-is-the-difference-between-milestone-and-a-deliverable )
- Don't play politics in your company, but account for it in your project
- Avoid being part of any conflict, only try to manage conflicts...
- Adhere to the PM guidelines set by your PMO
- Gather lessons learned and learn from previous lessons learned
- Have a positive and agreeable attitude (this will make team members more happy working with you)
