There are three memberships in PMI - Student, Regular, and Retired.  There are 5 different certifications.  To be eligible to take the PMP exam, you need to meet experience and education requirements.  The details of the certification requirements can be found in: http://www.pmi.org/en/Certification/~/media/PDF/Certifications/pdc_pmphandbook.ashx.  You may also want to look at the requirements for the other certifications found in the same Certification area of the web site.
