Is it true that project managment has weathered the recession?

During the recession, I have noticed that project management positions were still abundant. So, can we say that project management, as a profession, is recession proof that has weathered the 2008-2009 recession and can weather future recessions?

Why do you think PM was able to do this? Is it the high demand for PM all over the world?

Possibly not recession proof, but it is getting there.  It is a demonstration of the value executives believe project management will bring to the table.  There has been a growing demand in the BRIC countries in the past (Brazil, Russia, India, China) and it is still strong, particularly in Brazil and China where there is unprecedented growth.  There is a growing shift to the MIST countries (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, and Turkey).  Indonesia, for example, has made national infrastructure one of their top strategic priorities.
