How to end a project?

What are the steps that the project manager needs to make in order to formally end a project? Technically, is "ending" a project synonymous with "closing" a project? Or is it synonymous with "killing" a project?

Note: In our company when we say "ending a project" we mean "closing a project", but I just want to know what other companies mean when the say "ending a project".

Ending a project is the same thing as closing a project (ending a project does not mean cancelling or killing a project).

Ending a project consists of the following:

- Verifying the scope
- Closing the contract
- Releasing team members and formally notifying stakeholders that the project is done
- Creating the lessons learned document
- Creating the final project report
- Celebrating the project's end with the team members
