How does PMI verify work experience?

How does PMI verify the work experience claimed in my PMP application? Do they call/email current/previous employers? What if the previous company I previously worked in is now defunct or overseas, what will they do? Will they discredit my work experience years for that company?

The audits are completely random and you will be informed via email that you have been selected. This email is usually sent to you the moment that you submit your application. Along with the statement that you have been selected for an audit, the email also contains detailed audit instructions for you. You will need to get signatures on relevant sections of audit documents(as acknowledgement) from the people that you have named as the primary references in organizations that you have worked and send it to PMI.
