Is the PMP certification worth the time and effort?

I want to apply for the PMP in order to become a PMP certified project manager (like probably every project manager I know). I am wondering if the PMP certification is really worth my time and effort since I think it'll take me a lot of time to study and prepare for it. Can you advise?

It depends...

If you are a senior project manager or an experienced project manager with many years of experience, then the ROI of the PMP will probably not be that high. This is because you won't need it to get a raise or a better jobs. The PMP is just to prove your project management skills, and, again, if you are a senior PM or a very experienced one, then you have already proven that!

On the other hand, if your experience in project management is mediocre then the PMP is definitely worth the time and the effort.

Here's why:

- You will be able to apply for jobs that demands that candidates have the PMP certification.
- You will prove to current and future employers that you actually know how to manage projects.
- In case you're an accidental project manager (see: http://www.projectmanagementquestions.com/5605/is-project-management-an-accidental-profession ) then  you'll be able to learn about and apply real project management in your projects.
- You will most likely get a raise on your salary since according to many researches done on the subject, most Project Managers get a raise when they get their PMP certification.
- You will gain credibility in front of your team members and colleagues as someone who's experienced in project management.

As you can see, in case you're a project manager with just a few years of experience, then the PMP certification is certainly worth it...
