I'm new to project management so I'm sure this question might look very naive to some of you (please tolerate my ignorance on the subject)...

I just want to know how many project management processes are there. I have searched for my question on Google and I got confusing and non consistent answers (some state there are 5, others state there are 4, and others state there are 6)

One can answer this question in many different ways since it is not clear on what you mean by a "process".

Assuming the word process is used in reference to PMI and the PMBOK Guide, the PMBOK describes 5 process GROUPS not processes. Each of those process group include 2 or more processes. In the current edition of the PMBOK Guide (4th Ed) the 5 process groups have between them a total of 42 PROCESSES.

The PMBOK Guide specifies 5.  The PMBOK Guide is a collection of best practices however and does not prevent you from breaking these down further if it assists your company's project management methodology.  The Siebel eRoadmap methodology specified 7.

The 5 standard processes are:
Initiate
Plan
Execute
Control & Monitor
Close
