Who is a project driver?

I just read in an article something about a "project driver". Who is this role? Is it a formal project management role? Does this role exist in each and every project? What does a project driver do and is the role similar in any way to the project champion (I'm saying this because I think that the role of the project driver is to "drive" the project success, which is very similar to that of the project champion)?

As the below answer states, the term project driver is not formal (it is not mentioned in the PMBOK), so the role may differ from one company to the other. In general, a project driver is someone who sets the direction of the project and moves it forward. The role is usually identical to that of the project sponsor.

Not a formal term that I am aware of.  If it's a person, it should be the project sponsor, though in their absence, the PM may have to drive the project.

Project drivers more likely describe events or things -- see the answer at http://www.projectmanagementquestions.com/749/what-are-project-drivers .
