How do you manage stakeholder expectations throughout the project lifecycle

Can someone explain to me the process of managing stakeholder expectations throughout the project lifecycle? Should the majority of the work to manage the expectations be done in project planning phase (so that stakeholders won't be that demanding during the rest of the project)?

One of the best ways to manage stakeholder expectations throughout the project life cycle is to develop a communications plan that identifies the stakeholders, their communication preferences (i.e. how they want to receive communications) and the messages that will be communicated.  This won't always keep them from being demanding, but it will go a long way toward proactively managing their expectations.
