What is the difference between a task and a project?

I'm sure this is a simple question, but I'm not really looking for a simple answer. I want to know what is the difference between a task and a project. I know that a project may consist of one or more tasks, but what if the project consists only of one task, how do you differentiate it form a project?

A project is a temporary (has a beginning and an end) endeavor to create a unique product or service or other defined deliverable. A task is work product or activity contributing to the completion of the project.
