What is a project milestone?

Can someone please explain to me (concisely) what exactly is a project milestone?

A project milestone is a point in time, of no duration, often used as a measurement or checkpoint, where work can be verified or validated before moving forward.  Sometimes, these can also be used as “Go / No-Go” points.
