Functional organizations are comprised of people grouped together into silos by specialization (e.g. accounting, engineering).  Most communication and direction occurs within these groups or departments.  External communications occur through the department head.  The key characteristic is that each employee has only one manager.

Matrix organizations also group people by functional areas.  However each individual may report to multiple managers that are working and communicating across the specialties to complete tasks and projects.
