The project charter is a document which authorizes the project, could it be updated during course of project run when what and how?

If it's possible to update the project charter after the project starts, then please explain the process in details.

Major changes in project scope or budget would warrant an updated project charter.  These would be changes which exceed the reserves and contingencies set aside to manage risks and smaller changes.

This would be especially important if a Statement of Work (SOW) is serving as the project charter as it may be a legal document as well (e.g. part of a contract).

When it is appropriate, the project manager should bring up the change with the project sponsor who would be responsible for making the updates and working with the PM to communicate them.

A project charter can not be updated with the progress of work. A updating word is inappropriate, It can be revised. A project charter when ever be revised, it will duly signed by all concern parties. In some cases Sponsor and PM. in some cases Stakeholders also, in some cases client and contractor/s both, or may be a third party like consultant/s.

A project charter is sometimes common document, sometimes it may seperate for client and contractor.
When it is a common, then authorizes initially by client and agreemented jointly by both client and contractor.

Thus a project charter, may be an contract or agreement and it will be called as external.

If it is inside of one organization either a contractor or a client alongwith stakeholder then it may called as internal

In case of stakeholder or in case of common document it will be legal document for organisation.

Whereas, if it is only in between sponsor/Initiator or any authorizer and project Manager or any receiver(apointee for a work) then it is an informal and pure internal document.
