Techniques for project performance measurement

What are the most efficient techniques that we (as project managers) need to follow in order to measure the performance of our projects.

I know about the EVM (CPI, SPI, etc...) - are there better/more efficient techniques to check the performance/health of the project?

EVM is a better than average starting point because it takes a more holistic approach of looking at budget and schedule together.  Work Remaining (another EVM concept) will help you see the path forward.  Outside of that, you might consider some industry specific measures.  For example, in software, defect rate would be a good measure of product readiness for release.
