What is the analysis phase of a project?

What is the analysis phase of a project? I know that there are 5 phases, starting with initiating the project to closing the project. So where did this phase come from (I know for sure it's not one of the 5 phases), and where does it fall in the project (does it happen even before the project initiating)?

According to the PMBOK Guide, there is not an analysis phase.  I've often found analysis to be an appropriate activity for just about any project phase.

For reference, the 5-phases are:

Initiate
Plan
Execute
Monitor & Contol
Close.
