When to crash the project schedule?

When should the project manager crash the project schedule? Is it when he starts feeling that there is no way the project will be finished on time? Or is it when he's pushed by the stakeholders to finish the project earlier (I am assuming crashing the project will shorten the duration of the project if the latter is still on schedule)?

Crashing (adding more resources) isn't always successful if you just add bodies.  Be sure you are bringing in people with the right knowledge and skill sets, focused on tasks that can benefit from more resources.  If the team is distracted with training all the new people, while you will have some good teambuilding, the timeline and budget may really suffer.  Particularly if friction builds, people get frustrated, etc.

Hi!

Thanks for answering! What I want to know is when, during the course of the project, should I crash the project schedule?
