How many IT projects fail?

How many IT projects fail per year in the US (and worldwide if you know the number). Is the number of IT projects that are failing growing or shrinking with time? If it's growing then can we blame this on the increasing adoption of Agile to manage IT projects?

Also, is the number of IT projects that fail bigger than that of construction projects?

According to the CHAOS report on IT projects (released by the Standish group), one in every four projects fail (note: this statistics is from 2009).

This means if there are 500,000 IT projects undertaken in the US every year, there are 125,000 projects that have already failed or that will fail.

25% failure rate is a large number, but it's a definitive improvement over the year 2000, where the failure for IT projects was almost 50%.

I think the drop in failure rate over the years is the result of adopting formal project management to execute projects.
