What do direct costs refer to in a project. A short and sweet definition would be nice, and an example would be even nicer!

Direct costs are those that can be specifically identified with a single sponsored project. These costs usually include salaries/wages, fringe benefits, contracted services, supplies, equipment, travel, communication.Other Direct Costs include materials and supplies, publication costs, consultant services, long distance telephone/fax and subcontracts.
