What are some of the top advantages of fixed-duration scheduling?

I also have some other questions on this subject:

- Is it the most common type of scheduling?
- Under which circumstances should the project manager avoid fixed-duration scheduling?
- Which projects benefit the most from this type of scheduling?

Its not best practice, but if the project schedule can be more flexible and timeliness is of lesser importance, its a quicker way of getting a rough schedule together.  At a minimum, I found myself constantly having to remind folks about the difference between effort and duration.

This definitely would not be the way to go with deadline driven projects.  Duration is determined by the resources and effort applied, so if you needed to recover a task, you would have no way of figuring out what the new duration might be if more resources were applied, for example.
