What are the methods for requirement gathering?

What are the different methods/techniques that the project manager can employ for the requirement gathering process? Interviewing the customer is probably the most important one, but what else?

By the way, how long does the requirement gathering process should typically take?

The majority of requirements are usually gathered by some form of brainstorming, survey, or interview method.  These should cover all the stakeholders, including the customer, the project sponsor, senior executives, product management, etc.

These are collected, reviewed and managed until they can be fully articulated -- hopefully as SMART (specific measuable achievable realistic timebound) with use cases.  There is no set length of time, however in the software industry, 20% of project time is usually set aside for requirements (for non-Agile projects).
