Is MS Project hard to use?

Is Microsoft Project (the 2010 version) considered to be a software that is hard to use (i.e. with a steep learning curve)? I'm currently about to choose a project management software to use and I want something that is easy and has all the features I'm looking for. I know that MS Project has all the features I want, but I'm not sure if it's easy or not.

I find MS Project to be very easy to use once you get used with it (which takes about a week or so). However, I do have to say that I have a programming background, which makes means that I can't speak for everyone else.

It's a bit more complicated than Excel, that's for sure, but if you want to use only the basic features (creating the project schedule and allocating tasks), then it is very easy.

Quick note: There are many Project Managers using Microsoft Project, and that means that whatever question you have about it, you will find it answered somewhere on the web by another project manager.

The most important thing to learn about MS Project is getting past the setup and that you need to select the task type (MS Project automatically assigns a type to summary tasks) for each tasks.  For regular tasks, I normally choose fixed work or effort.

Having made this selection, MS Project will now expect you to fill in the work (effort) column with your estimates.  The formula duration = units x work (where units = # of resources) will be maintained. You can choose to change the number of resources and MS Project will respond by changing the duration while leaving the work or effort fixed.

Finally, once you understand how to enter the data and dependencies, you are on your way to building project schedules.

I have a short PowerPoint I consider my MS Project Quick Start Guide to get you through these basics quickly.  Leave a comment here including an email address I can reach you at and I will be happy to email you a copy.
