How to get experience in project management?

I would like to get into project management but everyone tells me that I need project management experience to do this. If I can't get into PM without PM experience, then how on earth could I become a PM?

Note: I'm currently working as a programmer in a medium sized company, and I really have a strong will to become a project manager, but I just can't see the road that leads me there.

You get experience in project management by getting involved in project management. Here's what you should do:

- Read about project management (online and offline)
- Get involved in the project management community (follow the top project management leaders on twitter and facebook)
- Try to ask your direct boss (who might be a project manager himself) to give you some simple project management tasks from time to time, with incremental difficulty (trust me, he'll enjoy it, good project managers like to delegate a lot).
- Once you know a few things about project management, you should get certified: take the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) test
- Afterwards, talk to your boss again and ask him to formally assign you some project management tasks
- Finally try to assume a project management role, such as project management assistant (see a description of the role here: http://www.projectmanagementquestions.com/875/what-are-the-responsibilities-the-project-manager-assistant )
- Once you're in, the sky is the limit (see the career path of the project manager, starting from the PMA: http://www.projectmanagementquestions.com/3356/is-project-management-a-career )

Good luck with your endeavor!
