Can someone tell me what are the differences between a PM and a project team? Can we say that the project manager is part of the project team, or does the project team consist solely of resources actually working on the project?

While theoretically it's possible to say that a project manager is part of the project team, technically it's not the case. The project team executes the project, does the real work on the ground. The project manager plans and oversees the work done, but rarely (though it's possible) works on the project itself (in this case it's possible to say that the project manager belongs to the project team)..

The project manager assigns the work to each member of the project team, these member do the work and each one of them updates the project manager (or the project scheduler) on the status of their tasks.
