Can someone explain to me, in layman's terms, what is the difference between a project and a plan, and how the two are related together?

Simple definition of project: A project is a temporary endeavor to create a new product or service.  The project has a beginning and an end.

Simple definition of a plan: The "roadmap" that will guide the project work which generally needs to consider nine knowledge areas -- its more than just a timeline or Gantt chart.
