From a project management's perspective, what are the advantages and the disadvantages of a functional organization? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, or is the other way around?

Do project managers prefer to work in functional organizational structures (or not)?

Project managers should prefer to work in projectized organizations.  Functional organizations actually can be further broken down into hierarchical, weak matrix, and strong matrix organizations, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.  In general the problem with functional organizations is the PM is often "competing" with functional managers for resources (not the intent of the functional organization, but this is reality).  The advantage is that the project manager should have a good project team as the functional managers are responsible for training of their personnel.
