Advantages and disadvantages of delphi technique

I would to know all the advantages and disadvantages of the Delphi technique. My PM mentor has always painted a bright picture of the Delphi technique, but I'm sure there are some disadvantages to it as well. I'm looking forward to a balanced answer!

Delphi has its limitations, especially that

1) Participants rarely move far from their initial views.
2) Take time to reach the concensus
3) Normally Delphi is used in the early stage or phase, e.g. estimates size, completion time, budget... as to provide a basis for something...

The primary advantage is that the opinions of one SME do not affect the opinions of all.  Everyone will have an opportunity to consider and re-consider their answers, but you avoid one person's mistake from becoming a key input.

The primary disadvantage may be time.  It may take more time to organize a Delphi technique than it does to just have an open and public brainstorming session.  In some cases though, I have seen multiple brainstorming sessions with different stakeholder groups take as much or more time than a well organized Delphi process.
