Can accountability be delegated?

Is it possible to delegate some managerial tasks to an employee and delegate the accountability of these tasks as well? I understand that most people will disagree, but here's how I see it: If I'm not the one who's doing the task, do I have to still assume accountability for it? Why can't the person to whom the task is delegated to be held accountable for that task?

No it can't, neither responsibility nor accountability can be delegated. Let's say you delegated a task to someone else, and that someone did not finish the task properly. Do you think the stakeholders will come after him, or after you?

The project sponsor is accountable for the project, and he cannot delegate that accountability to you, and you are responsible for the project, but you cannot delegate that responsibility to someone else.

Work can be delegated, responsibility and accountability can't.
