What is a master schedule?

This is probably advanced project scheduling, because I've been a project manager for a decade and today was the first time I know of the existence of a "master project schedule". What is it? And how does it differ from the normal project schedule that all project managers know?

Generally used for larger projects, the master schedule is a consolidation of all schedules for a project or projects.  There is a brief summary of the master schedule for MS Project at: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc543353.aspx.
