Would it make sense to institute a project management office?

We are a small company (just below a 100 employees), and we are thinking about establishing a PMO. Will it bring benefits for us? Can we afford its overhead? How many people do we need to allocate for the PMO?

Yes it would make sense, especially if your organization has several projects running in parallel.

The PMO will definitely create an overhead, but its benefits far surpass its overhead:

- It will ensure that your projects are consistent (same templates, same methodology, same tools)
- It will create more control on the project managers and the project management
- It will hold project managers accountable for their projects
- It will monitor the performance of projects and project managers
- It will continuously optimize the project management process
