First there is no such thing as "Business Project Management", and if there is then it's just a buzzword that just means Project Management.
Business project management is indeed applicable in the service industries, such as the IT industry, the telecom industry, etc...
Not all service industries currently benefit from project management, but more and more are adopting it (the latest convert is the Legal industry with Legal project management).
Examples of projects (where project management is used) in the service industry include:
- Developing a new website
- Enhancing the company's network infrastructure
- Creating a new telecom operator
- Upgrading the customer care department of a telecom operator
Project management provides a framework for the above projects, and it permits us to assess how much time and money a project (which can be the implementation of a new service) will cost us, and thus plan accordingly.
Traditionally, most of the projects have been managed using MS project (or Primavera in the construction industry) as a PM tool, which is good, but lacks collaboration features. Nowadays more and more project managers are using online PM tools for more team collaboration.
